Big Bold Goal | Our #MoreThanPinkKC Campaign
A lot of people think we have breast cancer figured out and that everyone is aware of the disease. It’s true that women who catch their breast cancer early have a 99%+ survival rate, but this is not everyone’s story.
In late 2016, our organization announced a bold plan nationally to reduce the nation’s 40,000 breast cancer deaths by 50 percent in 10 years, by improving access to quality and timely cancer care for the underserved and enhancing Komen’s research focus on lethal breast cancers.
This is our Big Bold Goal! To do this we need you!
See our overarching plans here:
Locally, we also have big plans for 2017, and we need to work together to make them a reality. We have a three-tiered approach to reduce breast cancer deaths:
> RESEARCH to find the latest advancements in treatments, prevention & cures.
This year, Komen Kansas City contributed $246,000 to the national investment of nearly $33 million. We have active research grants here in our backyard that total more than $7 million. These grants are targeting the full breadth of the disease from prevention to understanding metastatic cancer.
Our plan: We will continue to provide 25% of our dollars to fund innovative and lifesaving research.
> EDUCATION & AWARENESS of resources in our community to help medically vulnerable women.
Our data shows that while women are more aware of the disease, they are not aware of resources in the community that can help them get screened for little to no cost. There is also significant confusion about what screenings to get and when to begin them.
Our plan: A “Get Screened” outreach campaign to women in the Greater Kansas City service area on when to start screening, recognizing signs & symptoms, and how to receive no-cost mammograms. Our Breast Care Helpline will continue to provide women and families answers and solutions during this challenging time.
> ACCESS for women to get the screenings, diagnostics and survivorship care that they need.
It is estimated that nearly 1/3 of all breast cancer deaths could be prevented if women had better access to health care.
Our plan: We will increase our work with the Wyandotte County, KS Health Department and the Early Detection Works Program to secure funding and provide a community-based navigator to ensure women are getting screened, getting follow-up care and getting treatment if breast cancer is diagnosed. We will bring the mobile mammography coach to women who can’t get to screening centers on both sides of the state line. Currently, no funding exists for Missouri residents without insurance to get screenings on the mobile unit. We will provide funds for these screenings.
This is why we have started our #MoreThanPinkKC Campaign – to amplify our work to the next level with a specific focus on the goal of reducing deaths from breast cancer in our Greater Kansas City service area.
We are inviting you to be part of changing and saving lives!
Join us in being #MoreThanPinkKC by making a charitable gift of $218 or more (the average cost for a clinical breast exam and mammogram for someone without insurance). Gifts can be made all at once or spread out over a 12-month period.
